Plagiarism Policy

Effective Date: June 3, 2025

At HowTests, we are committed to cultivating a culture of originality, integrity, and intellectual honesty. As an educational platform dedicated to competitive exam aspirants, we take plagiarism seriously. Our goal is to ensure that every piece of content, whether generated by contributors, educators, or users, is authentic, properly attributed, and ethically produced. This updated policy reflects the evolving nature of content creation, including AI-assisted writing, and outlines clear preventive measures and consequences.

1. What Constitutes Plagiarism?

Plagiarism is the act of presenting someone else's work, ideas, or expressions as your own without proper acknowledgement. It includes but is not limited to:

1.1 Direct Plagiarism

Copying text word-for-word without using quotation marks or providing credit to the source.

1.2 Mosaic Plagiarism

Using phrases or ideas from a source, changing a few words, or rearranging the structure without citation.

1.3 Paraphrasing Plagiarism

Rewriting someone's content in your own words without giving due credit.

1.4 Self-Plagiarism

Resubmitting your own previously published content without disclosure or permission, including uploading identical content across multiple websites.

1.5 Unauthorized Use of Media or Research

Using images, tables, videos, data, or AI-enhanced graphics without permission or proper licensing.

2. AI-Assisted Content Disclosure

HowTests permits the use of AI tools (for assistance, not authorship) under the following rules:

  • AI-assisted content must be disclosed within the content.

Example: "This article was created with the assistance of an AI writing tool and reviewed by the HowTests editorial team."

  • Any AI-generated image must contain a visible caption.

Example: "This image was generated using an AI illustration tool."

  • Human editors review all AI-generated content before publication, but the contributor remains fully responsible for its originality and compliance.

3. Guidelines to Prevent Plagiarism

To protect content integrity, all contributors, writers, and users must:

  • Cite all sources for quotes, facts, or paraphrased material.
  • Use quotation marks for direct quotes.
  • Paraphrase with integrity: don't just reword; understand and reframe the content.
  • Attribute non-text content , including data, infographics, and images.
  • Keep records of all sources and references used.
  • Disclose reused content if submitting previously published work.
  • Avoid pasting AI output without review, revision, and proper credit.

4. Editorial Refinement & Detection Measures

At HowTests, all content submissions, manual or AI-assisted, go through the following:

  • Editorial Review for coherence and articulation, factual and argument accuracy by verifying them from credible sources like World Bank, Al Jazeera, etc., grammatical check, and ethical compliance.
  • Advanced Plagiarism Detection Tools (e.g., Turnitin, Copyscape) to screen each submission.
  • Manual Verification for flagged content or suspicious patterns.
  • Content Revision Requests for borderline paraphrasing or unclear sourcing.

5. Consequences of Plagiarism

Violating our plagiarism standards may result in the following:

  • Immediate content removal without prior notice.
  • Rejection of future submissions , even if minor plagiarism is detected.
  • Contributors will be given 3 to 4 opportunities, along with guidance on how to improve their content quality. If no significant improvement is observed after these chances, their author profile may be permanently removed from the platform .
  • Contributors found repeatedly or maliciously infringing content standards may face permanent blacklisting from HowTests . In severe cases involving copyright violations or damage to the platform's reputation, legal action may also be pursued.
